Columbia Energy & Environmental Services, Inc. (Columbia Energy) has been in business for over 25 years. We began as an engineering firm in support of nuclear cleanup operations for the U.S. Department of Energy at Hanford in Richland, Washington. We have progressively grown from our origins into a full-service engineering and fabrication company providing cost-effective solutions in the nuclear, defense, energy, and hazardous waste industries.
We are an established, woman-owned small business headquartered in Richland, Washington. We offer full-service engineering, design, fabrication, instrumentation and controls, electrical, database and software engineering, technology development, and geophysics/subsurface imaging.
We also have facilities in Tucson, Arizona and Aiken, South Carolina and employ over 125 personnel. We are presently licensed to provide engineering within the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and South Carolina.
CEO – Sue Brendel
Sue joined Columbia Energy in June of 2007 bringing her prior experience as a local business owner. Her experiences include: human resources, business development, program development, contract negotiations, staff training and management. In addition to day-to-day oversight, Sue is responsible for establishing the strategic vision, developing and implementing the plans to achieve that vision. She oversees the human resource department, which includes responsibility for the employee recognition program, administration of our 401(k) program, and the Voluntary Employee Benefit Association (VEBA). She also runs our community outreach program which is anchored by the Columbia Energy Charitable Foundation. Sue graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science degree.
President – Brian Brendel
Brian has been employed at Columbia Energy since the doors opened in 1989. Brian has a broad and varied experience base that includes: projects, engineering, environmental, industrial safety and hygiene, D&D, and analytical chemistry. Currently, Brian provides client interface, project management and delivery, proposal and business development, along with technical support to our various projects. Brian is supporting activities that include Tank Retrieval and Closure, Supplemental Treatment, LDM, and the SST Program. Brian graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. Brian has preformed nearly every function, technical or administrative, for Columbia Energy at one time or another.
Sue and Brian have been married since 1997. They have been blessed with three children: Sam, Morgan, and their daughter Kate who passed away due to premature birth in 2004. The Brendel’s are very active with the Kate’s Team Foundation that benefits the March of Dimes and other charitable activities throughout the community. In their free time they enjoy spending time together and with their children.
