An Experienced Team of Environmental and Engineering Professionals
Columbia Energy & Environmental Services, Inc. (Columbia Energy) is a woman-owned engineering and environmental consulting company that delivers results. We were established in 1989, initially providing environmental, safety, and health (ES&H) services to government agencies and commercial nuclear clients. Columbia Energy, two decades and 80 employees later, and having added A&E capability, has grown a solid reputation as a provider of solutions to the energy, defense, and hazardous waste industries.
Columbia Energy’s people, practices, and business philosophy provide our customers with outstanding service that meets their requirements – on time and within budget every time.

Design and construction of a sophisticated first-of-a-kind leak detection system.
We were awarded a fixed-price contract from CH2M HILL Hanford Group, Inc. in December 2003. The task was to design and deploy an ASME NQA-1-compliant leak detection system for single-shell tanks at the Hanford Site. The effort was a first-of-a-kind deployment at Hanford. Our scope of work included design completion, procurement, fabrication, and field testing on an accelerated schedule.

Developed and managed a procedure development team.
Bechtel Hanford, Inc. needed to streamline over 2,500 active procedures into a single group. Our team reduced the total number of procedures to 300 – on-time and on-budget.

Decontamination of a metal parts casting plant.
We were retained to characterize and decontaminate a commercial casting plant that used uranium sand in its casting processes. The client retained our professionals to characterize the facility for radioactive contamination, decontaminate the facility, and provide post-decontamination characterization and surveys. Contamination from uranium and uranium daughter products was found throughout the process, administrative, and wastewater areas of the plant. We decontaminated approximately 10,000 square feet of walls and floors, numerous pieces of process equipment, and miscellaneous facility support and operating equipment. At completion of the project, we prepared a summary report that identified the locations and levels of contamination before any decontamination was conducted, the actions taken to decontaminate the plant, and the post-decontamination radiation levels.

Deactivation of a nuclear facility.
Our nuclear experts prepared the Deactivation Plan for the Hanford Site 105-C Reactor. The reactor complex contains numerous support structures, utility connections including cooling water supply and high voltage electrical systems, as well as the reactor facility and generating station. We defined the deactivation sequence and schedule, scope of deactivation activities, and defined the end points of the various deactivation activities to ensure that the reactor could remain safely in a standby condition. During deactivation of the reactor complex, we provided health physics and industrial hygiene technicians, performed portions of the facility characterization, performed field engineering, and provided on-site technical specialists supporting deactivation.
